The dignity of zoste patrikia was awarded to the empress’s chief attendant. Her high status is evident from the fact that she had the right to dine at the imperial table, together with the patriarch and a few high courtiers. 'zoste' was the only truly female dignity at the court, as she held her rank in her own right, independent of the rank of her husband.
